The Happy Cook was founded in 1978 by Jean and Jim Carswell. They started a small business in 1969 in Keswick, Virginia but decided to move to the Barracks Road Shopping Center in 1972. By 1978 they realized the need for a gourmet kitchen store in the Charlottesville community, so they started The Happy Cook. The Carswells immediately distinguished The Happy Cook from the big box stores by offering a warm, inviting store filled with the best in kitchenwares from around the world and a knowledgeable and friendly staff.  These qualities continue to set The Happy Cook apart from other kitchen stores. 

The Happy Cook was purchased in 1997 by Court and Tammye Van Clief, who gave the business a substantial “face lift.” These renovations transformed the look of The Happy Cook.   
In 2005, The Happy Cook came under the ownership of Monique Moshier.  Monique, a graduate of Sweet Briar College, has always been passionate about cooking and the culinary arts.  With a background in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Monique did not set out to own a gourmet kitchen shop, but the opportunity was one that she could not pass up. Monique is determined to maintain the tradition of excellence and service that has made The Happy Cook a delightful retreat for over thirty years!
